| DANCE CLASSES "I'm going to make my whole body dance," shouts four-year-old Matthew, a student at the Children's International Workshop. Matthew is participating in the daily music and movement class involving Eurhythmics. Eurhythmics is a technique implying a way of freely moving one's entire body to music. Each child interprets the music through his body movements.
Bob Marley and the Beatles appear to be the favorites, but the children also listen and dance to classical, jazz, folk and rock music. The teacher also uses a flute and guitar, teaching the children songs related to this. Through dance the children develop coordination, strength and flexibility.
We start off with a structured warm-up which includes basic stretches, bounces and yoga exercises. Then the music is turned on or played by the teacher and they encourage the children to move to the music. The dancers seem to cover the space horizontally and vertically as they spin, roll, leap, gallop and skip around the room.
In turn, they act and dance out their dreams, choosing other children to become characters in their dreams. To spur their creativity and imagination, we lead them in "color" and "mood" dances. A red dance is different from a white dance, while angry and happy dances are also quite discernable. |
