Pictured above is Janet Xia Zhen Zhou, our main teacher for the two years olds. Janet was born in Shanghai and has been with us for 12 years.
| ART CLASSES Even two-year-olds have their own style, although it may appear a bit abstract. We try not to have the children work with stereotyped art, such as stick figures and the turkeys and trees you see in most nursery schools. We stay away from conventional children's art, which we feel is created by the teacher, not the child.
Each day the students use different materials in an art experience supervised by the art teacher. Normal household items like aluminum foil, paper bags, dried beans and empty tissue rolls are magically transformed into rocketships, wall hangings and island paradises.
These art experiences are group oriented, rather than individually oriented. Approximately six children of similar age and concentration abilities sit around a large wooden table. The art teacher helps relate the art to the children's reality and to their everyday life. The children discuss with their teacher and other students what they are thinking about when they create an image. Words and language are borne out of this experience.
The art that the children create reflects styles popular in adult art schools today. Our art teachers agree that observing the children gives them ideas for their own art. They find that their work is relevant to their own painting and collage works.
